Description:

A young boy named Tip lives in the north of Oz with an evil witch named Mombi. One day, to avoid a terrible punishment (being turned into a statue) Tip escapes from Mombi and sets off for the Emerald City. He is accompanied by Jack Pumpkinhead, a being Tip created out of wood with a pumpkin for a head, and a wooden Saw-Horse, both of whom were brought to life with the marvelous Powder of Life.

They reach the Emerald City just before it is taken over by General Jinjur and her Army of Revolt. Escaping from the Emerald City with the Scarecrow, they set off to discover how to retake the Emerald City and restore the Scarecrow to the throne.

Mom's Review:

This is one of my favorite of the Oz books. The characters are some of Baum's best: Jack Pumpkinhead, the Saw-Horse, the Woggle-Bug, and my favorite, the Gump. The story moves along quickly and there are many delightful adventures and surprises.
