Where is Live Discussions?

Just to let you know that I've temporarily disabled the Live Discussions box because it seems to be putting a strain on system resources. I hope to be able to re-enable it soon, but I wanted to see if removing it would help speed things up until I can solve the problems.

You can still see the latest posts by going to forums and then clicking on each forum. The ones with new comments are at the top. I hope to be able to resolve this soon and get the Live Discussions back.

I'm so sorry, but isn't it better to have the site working without Live Discussions than not working at all?

I added an "Active Forum Topics" block to temporarily take the place of Live Discussions. It's like Live Discussions, but it doesn't show the comment count. I know that's not quite as good, but hopefully it will help until I can figure out how to make it work with Live Discussions.

Have you noticed that since I disabled Live Discussions, the site has been zippy?

Neways, if you hold your mouse over a forum topic for a few seconds, a little box will pop up underneath your mouse, indicating the number of posts there have been on the forum topic. You can check out the posts that way.^_^

I'm so so sorry, Icey and everyone. I still miss Live Discussions, too. But I'm just afraid to put it back because removing it seemed to fix the problems where the site kept getting hung up every couple of days.

I plan to upgrade the server over the summer, and when I do I'll install a new version of the software. When I do, I'll reactivate Live Discussions, in hopes that the new version will work better.

It's really weird, but apparently some people had a Live Discussions menu item on the left, but it didn't show up for everyone. (It didn't show up for me, which is why I didn't know about it).

Anyway, I went in and officially enabled it (it was disabled, so I can't figure out why it was appearing for some people). The menu item takes you to a separate Live Discussions page, which shouldn't slow down the site because it doesn't load on every page.

I know it's not as good as having the Live Discussions block on the right. And don't get too excited, because it only shows a small number of items, and I can't figure out how to make it show more, although I'll keep working on it. But - at least it shows all types of nodes, not just forum topics, and it's better than nothing.

OK, I fixed it so that now LiveDiscussions shows 50 items. So now you can click on LiveDiscussions in the menu on the left, and see the last 50 nodes of any type that have been commented on since you last looked at them.

And, because it's on a separate page, it shouldn't slow down the site like the Live Discussions block did.

Plop! Apparently, the word didn't get out that Live Discussions is back. Look in the menu on the left, where it has "my account" and "my inbox." You should see a link to "Live Discussions." It's a little less convenience because it's on a separate page, but you get used to that, and the good thing is that it shows not only forums, but blog posts, polls, whatever.

Having it on a separate page seems to keep it from crashing the site.
