Wolves and cats (and Warriors fanfics...) are pretty common. Dragons are surprisingly under-novelized (as main characters/subjects). So are unicorns, gryphons, birds, and thimbles. So I vote one of those. :D

Where exactly DO you live?
This might be odd, but basing it off Ferrets would be neat. They're intelligent creatures, and I was just reading about them. It would make for an interesting story without too many inhibitations due to species. ^_^
